Summer 2023 Position Opening – Water Quality Intern
Fitzgerald Environmental Associates (FEA) is a Vermont-based water resources firm offering consulting services in applied water and geospatial sciences to a diverse clientele of government, non-profit, and private entities. FEA’s core service areas – river and floodplain planning and restoration, stormwater monitoring and design/permitting, and wetlands delineation/permitting – are currently experiencing growth in large part due to our reputation for quality and cost-effective work across Vermont and the Northeast. FEA is well positioned and ready to respond to growing demand for these services in our region due to anticipated increases in State and Federal Funding for clean water and transportation projects in 2023 and beyond.
FEA seeks a paid Water Quality Intern to join our team for the 2023 field season to support project-based consulting within our core service areas of rivers, stormwater, and wetlands. The successful candidate will provide support to, and collaborate with, FEA team members across a wide range of field-based environmental projects. The position will be a full-time, temporary position starting in mid-May and extending through August.

The successful candidate will provide support to, and collaborate with, FEA team members across a wide range of field-based environmental projects. The position will be a full-time, temporary position starting in mid-May and extending through August.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field work and data collection in support of water quality project assessment, planning, design, and permitting. Field work may involve long days with travel and occasional to frequent overnights, work in inclement weather, and extensive hiking over varied terrain and/or wading in flowing streams.
- Assist with the collection of Forest Road Erosion Inventory data on state-owned forest roads on public lands throughout Vermont.
- Perform data entry and quality assurance reviews.
- Translate field-collected GPS data into maps using ESRI mapping software and/or AutoCAD.
- Assist with survey data collection and preparation of topographic site plans.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Completed or working toward a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
- One to two seasons of field experience supporting environmental projects. Prior experience working in consulting a plus. Experience with stream assessments and municipal road erosion inventories a plus.
- Proficiency in ESRI GIS software. AutoCAD familiarity a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office program suite.
- Experience with preparation of technical reports and planning documents.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and be innovative in solving problems.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to provide own transportation to and from various work sites and locations (mileage reimbursement available).
